History of Pirates in the OBX

The Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean and the Atlantic began in the late 17th century and continued until the mid-18th century. During this time, the waters off the coast of North Carolina were a popular hunting ground for pirates, who preyed on ships carrying goods from Europe to the colonies. The Outer Banks provided a perfect location for pirates to hide and restock their ships, as the numerous inlets and coves offered shelter from storms and provided easy access to the open sea.
One of the most famous pirates to operate in the Outer Banks was Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. He was a notorious figure who terrorized the coast of North Carolina and Virginia in the early 18th century.
The construction of lighthouses and the establishment of naval bases along the coast made it difficult for pirates to operate in the area. However, the legacy of piracy in the Outer Banks lives on, and the region remains a popular destination for tourists interested in its history.
