Families who travel to the Outer Banks enjoy well-deserved time away from their busy schedules. Here, beaches, waves, amazing dining, and opportunities to explore museums and lighthouses alike abound. When you’re looking for a place that embodies the best of it all, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a must! This one-of-a-kind destination offers visitors access to unique natural terrain and a variety of recreational activities. It’s protected by the National Park Service and encompasses some of the most inspiring stretches of shoreline along North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

Things to do on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore

A visit to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore promises to be unforgettable, no matter when you arrive or how long you stay. With 70 miles of sandy beaches to explore, there’s no shortage of seaside activities to enjoy. A simple stroll along the sand is made that much more enjoyable thanks to boardwalks and access ramps. As you wander, there’s a good chance you’ll come across some incredible and protected sea turtle nesting sites that are active depending on the time of year you travel. Kite flying is another popular family activity on Hatteras Island, thanks to strong wind patterns and a history of helping visitors take to the sky. These very beaches sit near the place where the Wright Brothers first successfully flew an airplane!

Off-road vehicles are permitted in some beach areas at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, while surf-fishing, windsurfing, shelling, and crabbing are also fun activities to try out while you’re in the area. Beach fires are allowed between November 16 and April 30 from 6 AM to 10 PM with a permit, offering a memorable way to enjoy cooler evenings along the shore.

Wildlife viewing is another highlight of the seashore. Depending on the time of year, visitors may spot pelicans flying low over the waves, dolphins swimming offshore, or shorebirds feeding along the waterline. Early morning and sunset are especially good times to look for wildlife and enjoy quieter stretches of beach.

Explore the Seashore from Bodie Island to Hatteras

One of the best ways to experience the National Seashore Cape Hatteras area is by exploring different access points along the barrier islands. A short drive can take you from the beaches near Bodie Island to the quieter stretches, where long views of open shoreline and rolling dunes define the landscape.

Each area of the Hatteras Island National Seashore offers something a little different. Bodie Island provides easy access from Roanoke Island and is a great place to combine a beach stop with a lighthouse visit. Farther south, Hatteras Island is known for wide beaches that are popular with anglers, shell hunters, and anyone looking for a less crowded stretch of sand.

Highway 12 connects the entire seashore, making it easy to turn a beach day into a scenic drive. You can stop at multiple beach access points, explore a fishing spot, or spend time walking the shoreline before heading back for the evening. It’s an easy way to experience the natural side of the Outer Banks without planning a full-day excursion.
