Types of Shells You Can Find

Did you know that the study of shells is called conchology? You can become a conchologist in your own right when you visit the Outer Banks!

Common shells found here include sturdy and colorful scallop shells, delicate coquina shells, and highly sought-after conch shells. Whelks, which resemble small conchs, are another valued discovery, as are smooth and iridescent moon snails.

Scallop Shells

Possibly some of the easiest shells to find in the Outer Banks, scallop shells have a pretty recognizable shape, with a fan-like structure and rigid lines throughout. They are typically white, cream, orange, or pink and are popular with collectors for their recognizability.

Coquina Shells

These tiny, but colorful shells are often found right along the shoreline in large numbers. You can recognize these shells by their long, wedge-shaped form and their variety of colors, ranging from lavender to pink, yellow, and blue. Due to their small size, they typically wash up in clusters, meaning you’ll hopefully be able to share them with your group once you spot them!

Whelk Shells

These larger spiraled shells can be a real treat to find, especially when they’re fully intact. These will typically come in duller colors, ranging from light tan to grayish white. These long, dramatic-looking shells are recognized by the long opening on one side. While these are a bit harder to find in the area, collectors love whelk shells as they make for great displays and keepsakes.

Conch Shells

Queen Helmet Conch

One of the most sought-after types of shells for any beachcomber, these large, beautiful shells feature distinctive openings and large, sharp teeth. The type of conch that shows up here in the Outer Banks is known as the Queen’s Helmet Conch, and can be found sparingly on south-facing beaches.

Scotch Bonnet Shells

Scotch Bonnet

This is perhaps the holy grail of any Outer Banks shelling day. The scotch bonnet shell is the official North Carolina State shell. You can recognize the beauties by their plump mid-section and distinctive brown patterns. While this is the official state shell, finding these along the shore may be a bit challenging, as they are quite rare on Outer Banks beaches. These may be small, only clocking in at around 2 inches, but if you find one, you’ve come across a real treasure.

Seasonal Changes

Shelling conditions and the types of shells you find can vary with the seasons. In the spring and fall, the beaches are less crowded, and strong tides often wash up more shells, making these ideal times for shelling. During winter, you might find more extensive and more intact shells, as the rougher seas tend to bring more treasures ashore.
