What happened to the settlers has long since been some of the most infamous lore of the area. Read along as we tell you all about it!

The Mysterious Disappearance of the Lost Colony

The settlers of the Roanoke Colony faced many challenges, including conflicts with indigenous tribes occupying the land and a shortage of supplies and resources. Governor John White returned to England for supplies shortly after the colony’s establishment, but was delayed for three years due to the Anglo-Spanish War.
When he finally returned in 1590, he found the colony deserted. Theories about the settlers’ fate range from assimilation with local tribes to relocation to Hatteras Island. Despite numerous archaeological investigations, the fate of the Lost Colony still remains unresolved. While some researchers believe there is evidence to suggest that the colonists assimilated with the indigenous tribes, others disagree due to a lack of a peer review on this study.
“The Lost Colony” Outdoor Drama

To commemorate and dramatize this historical mystery, Paul Green wrote “The Lost Colony,” a symphonic outdoor drama first performed in 1937. Held at the Waterside Theatre on Roanoke Island, the play draws thousands of visitors each summer. It is the nation’s longest-running outdoor symphonic drama!
