A trip to the Outer Banks can be accessed in a variety of ways. While some visitors opt to make the experience a full road trip, there are also options to fly into airports that are nearby and rent a car instead. The following are a few destinations to consider when you’d prefer to fly and rent a car the next time travel plans bring you this way.

Small Local Airports for Private Planes

Those who are heading to the Outer Banks by private charter or personal plane will want to consider landing at some of the local smaller airports and driving from there. Currituck County Regional Airport was once used for military training flights but today is run by Currituck County and is located at 264 Airport Road in Maple. The Dare County Regional Airport is another option for those looking to land in Manteo. This is a busy stop that services private planes and tour departures as well. It’s found at 410 Airport Road. The First Flight Airport is another option owned and operated by the U.S. National Park Service. It’s located near the Wright Brothers National Memorial at 1000 N Croatan Highway in Kill Devil Hills and services primarily small Cessna aircraft.

Commercial Options to Consider

Travelers taking a commercial flight and renting a car at the airport will want to focus their itinerary plans on Norfolk International Airport when heading to the Outer Banks. Situated approximately 80 miles from Kitty Hawk, this airport makes it easy to reach the Outer Banks in about 1.5 hours depending on traffic. Major airlines like Delta, Southwest, United, and American fly into Norfolk International Airport and on-site car rental services as well as Uber and taxi options are available on-site. The Norfolk International Airport is found at 2200 Norview Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is another option to consider when flying in and driving to the Outer Banks. Making this your landing point means you’ll have more time to enjoy the view on the way in. The airport is about 210 miles from Nags Head and a drive takes approximately 3.5 hours to complete. The benefit to landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport over Norfolk International is that it’s a much bigger destination to arrive at meaning more rental options when it comes to booking a car option that’s preferable. The Raleigh-Durham International Airport is located at 2400 John Brantley Boulevard in Morrisville, North Carolina, and the path from the airport to the Outer Banks is best enjoyed along scenic US 64.
