Everything You Need to Know About a Day Trip to Ocracoke Island

Why Take a Day Trip to Ocracoke Island?

Taking a day trip to Ocracoke Island is a fantastic way to escape the Outer Banks’ crowds during the peak summer season. This isolated strip of land along North Carolina’s coastal barrier islands is one of the top-ranked beaches in the country, receiving rave reviews and even topping famed stretches of sand on the Hawaiian Islands. The relaxed atmosphere with very few things to do other than soak in the sun’s rays is a nice contrast to the wide variety of attractions in Nags HeadManteo, and Kill Devil Hills.

Ocracoke Island Sights and Activities

The best way to spend a day trip to Ocracoke Island is on the beach. There aren’t any condos, homes, or apartments along the ocean shoreline, so the natural beauty is second to none. This is about as close as you will get to spending time on a deserted island, and it’s simply fantastic. It’s just you, your family, and the sound of waves lapping the seashore. The small town on the southeastern corner of the island has an assortment of shops, restaurants, and historical attractions that are fun to explore before driving to the beach.

Getting to Ocracoke Island

The journey from Manteo to Ocracoke Island requires multiple forms of transportation, but it’s well worth the effort. Hop in your car early in the morning and drive east on Highway 64 to Nags Head before turning south on Highway 12. From there, you’ll travel down the scenic coastal road past lighthouses, over bridges, and through wildlife refuges until you reach the town of Hatteras about an hour and twenty minutes later. Then, purchase your ferry ticket (make sure you arrive at least 20 minutes ahead of departure time) for the short ferry ride to the island. Once you arrive, soak in the serene setting for a memorable day trip to Ocracoke Island!
