The Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, North Carolina, is a gorgeous 10-acre oasis near the site of England’s lost colony. This tract of land provides guests with a serene spot to take a break from the beach and enjoy the beautiful array of flowers, landscapes, and local foliage. Named after the large gardens kept to entertain Queen Elizabeth I, the Elizabethan Gardens contain a distinct English theme throughout the grounds. This Manteo, NC, attraction is a fantastic place to spend a sunny afternoon strolling under the many large, shady trees! Admission to the gardens costs $9 plus tax per adult with reduced prices for kids depending on their age group. You can even pay to bring your dog in with you!
Exhibits and Highlights
The beautiful centerpiece of the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, NC, is the Sunken Garden. Topiary designs flourish around a grand fountain, and a seasonal selection of flowers outline the beautiful sight. Several brick structures around the complex elicit an English influence, from the stately front gates to the Gatehouse near the President’s Walk and the Queen’s Rose Garden. A large looping pathway encircles the Great Lawn and Sunken Garden, where towering oak trees, woodland collections, and flower exhibits accompany statues of Queen Elizabeth and other figures.
Halfway around the circuit, stop at the overlook for stunning views out across Roanoke Sound. The first English colonists shared a similar view over 400 years ago when they first landed on our beautiful island. After you finish exploring the Elizabethan Gardens, walk over to Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and catch a showing of The Lost Colony to learn more about this mysterious piece of missing history.
