One of the best things about coming to the Outer Banks is that if you’re in one town or community, it’s rather easy to make time for a day trip to one of the other charming coastal towns. One of those communities is Frisco, which sits around 55 miles from Manteo. The roughly 90-minute drive takes you past some of the area’s great wildlife, lighthouses, local history, and more. Begin Your Drive Along NC Highway 12

We’d recommend hitting the road early and following US-64 East out of Manteo, before hopping onto NC Highway 12 south. Along the way, you’ll pass by Oregon Inlet, where you can stop by the Bodie Island Lighthouse if you have some time for a break. The lighthouse is known for its distinctive black-and-white design and the nearby marshland views. While the trip isn’t too long, we’d suggest packing some water, sunscreen, and beach supplies for later adventures.

Explore Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Continuing south, you’ll likely pass by the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Established in 1938, this spot serves as a sanctuary for much of the area’s wildlife, including migratory birds such as waterfowl, shorebirds, and wading birds. The center is home to a population of loggerhead sea turtles, as well as a visitor center and the North Pond Wildlife Trail.

Discover Native History in Frisco

Once you hit town and settle into your stay, one of the best places to visit is the Frisco Native American Museum and Natural History Center. The museum is home to thousands of artifacts from various indigenous cultures from around the country. You’ll also find exhibits dedicated to the Croatoan people, who once thrived on Hatteras Island.

Spend the Afternoon at Frisco Beach

After you’re done on the road, enjoy a fun afternoon at this pristine, family-friendly beach on Hatteras Island. The south-facing coastline contributes to calmer waves and waters, making this a great spot to wade out or take a swim. Along with the gorgeous coastline, the beach features plenty of parking, a boardwalk, seasonal restrooms, and showers.
