Going on vacation to the Outer Banks with your dog is quite easy with a little bit of planning. There are lots of Outer Banks pet friendly vacation rentals for your dog to stay in, as well as beaches and parks for your dog to play in. Most require dogs remain on leashes or under your control. Each beach has different rules provided below.
Southern Shores beaches are the least pet friendly in the outer banks as pets are prohibited on any town beach from May 15 - September 15. Leash laws are enforced the remainder of the year. For more information call 252.261.2394.
Kitty Hawk beaches require leash not to exceed six (6) feet in length between 10am to 6pm from the Friday before Memorial Day until the day after Labor Day. The leash may be extended during other times, but must be retractable to 12 feet. Well trained dogs are allowed to be unleashed under close supervision of owner, not to exceed thirty (30) feet in distance between the dog and owner. For more information call 252.261-3552.
Kill Devil Hills beaches are not pet friendly from May 15th through September 15th as no dogs are allowed on town beaches during the day. You can bring dogs to the beach after 6pm. This law does not apply to service dogs. For more information call 252.449.5300.
Nags Head leash law requires leashes not to exceed ten (10) feet in length. Leashed pets allowed on town beaches year round. For more information call 252.441.5508.
Manteo leash law requires dog leashes not to exceed six (6) feet in length. Leashed pets are allowed on the waterfront year round. For more information call 252.473.2133.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore leash law at National Parks requires leashes not to exceed six (6) feet in length. For more information call 252.473.2111.
Remember that the sand can get really hot during the day and that your dogs foot pads could be burned. Morning and evening are the best times to bring your pet to the beach. Always remember fresh water in case none is available. Steering clear of wildlife and breeding grounds will help ensure the beaches remain pet friendly for everyone to enjoy. Also be aware of possible strong currents if your dog enjoys swimming.
